The Peatland Library
Our mission is clear: to create the world's largest collection of writings on peatlands, with books from all regions, on all topics, in all languages. And to make these available to people who explore, study, plan, implement and make decisions. For everyone who wants to know more about peatlands and make the world a better, fairer place. Not only supported by facts, but also by emotion, beauty, hope...
It all began in 2013 with PeNCIL (Peatland and Nature Conservation International Library), a book collection in Villa Ellernholz, as a loose initiative of private individuals, the university and the Succow Foundation. In 2021, the ‘Moorbibliothek’ was established as a trust, managed by the Succow Foundation.
Since July 2025, the Moorbibliothek exists as a foundation with legal capacity: autonomous, independent, non-profit, and still closely connected to the Greifswald Mire Centre and its partners. It has its own beautiful space: a former lecture hall building, fully renovated and newly furnished, 350 metres from Greifswald Central Station. A protected monument, barrier-free, forever and for everyone:

The Peatland Library is a reference library by appointment. This means that the collection can only be used in the library. If you would like to visit, please send an email stating when you would like to come and what you are interested in.
Part of the collection can already be found at https://opac.lbs-greifswald.gbv.de/. We are constantly cataloguing and expanding. Everything we are allowed to digitise is made available free of charge in the Digital Library of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
