Biodiversity
The Greifswald Mire Centre aims to provide a scientific basis for the development of national and regional strategies for the protection of peatland biodiversity in industrialised as well as in developing countries and countries with economies in transition. In addition, the Centre studies flora and fauna and the effect of land use, and aims to raise awareness on peatland biodiversity.
Core areas of our work include:
- Peatland conservation: Development of criteria, prioritisation, operationalisation
- Global GIS peatland database
- Revised edition of the Global Peatland Restoration Manual
- Best Practice Guidelines for selected peatland types and regions
- Scientific publications on peatlands and biodiversity
- Capacity building
"Peatlands are a critical element of Europe’s natural capital and investing in them as part of Europe’s green infrastructure will not only significantly contribute to EU biodiversity goals, but will also provide multiple ecosystem benefits to society in the face of climate change."
Micheal O’Briain, Deputy Head of the Nature Unit in European Commission, DG Environment, 2014
