Climate protection

In light of the great potential of peatlands for climate change mitigation, we offer targeted scientific analyses and policy consultancy on rewetting and paludiculture. We assist international climate efforts and obligations under the Kyoto Protocol and its post-2020 follow-up and offer advice on peatland-based reporting in the National Inventory Report to the UNFCCC. We work to develop innovative financing concepts for peatland conservation, by addressing markets for ecosystem services and carbon markets in particular.

Core areas of our work include:

  • Tailor-made consultancy for decision-makers
  • Scientific publications on peatlands and the climate
  • Analysis of peatland emissions and global list of key category countries
  • Global high resolution (1:25.000) GIS on peatland distribution, status and emissions
  • Further methodological development of the GEST approach, including remote sensing
  • Wordwide capacity building for reporting greenhouse gas emissions from peatlands

"… protecting and restoring peatlands is perhaps another key 'low hanging fruit' and among the most cost-effective options for climate change mitigation."

Achim Steiner, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, United Nations Environment Programme Executive Director, Bali, December 2007
